    (1785)

    No40. Febr 19. 1785

James Fergusson at 42 is affected every second day with a cold fit, succeeded by heat & sweating & with all the other symptoms of an ague. The fit is attended with very acute pain in the left side of his chest.

He complains also of severe dry cough. From the above symptoms he finds himself much debilitated. Appetite bad. Belly regular. Pulse at present natural.

This affection commenced about three months ago at which time he was first seized with a pain in his back, attended with coldness & shivering, to this succeeded in a short time an acute pain in his head, which was followd by a hot fit & at length a profuse diaphoresis superveend. In this succession have the symptoms continued ever since.

He can assign no cause for his disease. He has used the Peruvian bark at different times. But as soon as he gave up the use of it he was always seizd with a return of his disease.
