    David Henry

    (1785)

    David Henry March. 12th.

In history of this patients case not many sympt are enum.

These however in my opin suffic distinct, to charact affect, to which subj.

Have here the ordin sympt of what known by common title of stom compl.

And in pain of stom, borborigm, flatus, eruct & vomiting, have what may be consid as great constit of Dyspep.

Into defin of that disease indeed, as given by Dr Cullen, other sympt also enter.

But these, such for example as bound state of belly, not to be consid as necess constit.

For not unfreq. as is the case with our patient, attended even with looseness.

And indeed may perhaps be alledged, that in this affect, belly rather irregul, than either loose or bound.

Often even sudden transit, from one state to other.

And by both, when occurring to any great degree, affect aggrav.

Hence in treatm, few partic more diffic, than to preserve regul state of disch.

While make this remark, with regard to state of belly, may also obs, that other sympt likewise, adm of consid variety.

In so much that in diff cases, have very diff sets of sympt.

With some anorex, nausea, cardial. acidit at stom & the like.

But although in pres case, none of these can be said to occurr, yet here suff. combin, to charact the affect.

While however disease distinct markd, yet no sympt, from which could inferr, that exist to great degree.

Nothing, which could by any means be consid, as alarm.

    Pain indeed at times acute

But this, from transit nature, had reason to believe arose merely from flatul.

And when that the case, always much more distress than dang.

Even howevr slightest inst of dyspep, often turn out to be very obstin.

Could not therfore with great confid look for speedy cure.

At same time, had compar. speaking been but of short contin.

For six months, not any long period, for stom affect.

And had not during that time resisted any powerf means of cure

Hoped therfore that should soon at least be able to allev. his affect.

This to be expectd from such remed as would strength tone of stom.

While at same time, had tend. both to prev inordin action, & to support regul disch. by belly.

Was with these views, that directed for patient the Elix ex Aloe & Rheo.

This while an excell stom is also in gen gentle laxat.

Here however wished to prev. effect of imm action on stom.

As means therefore of counteract vomiting, or even looseness, which might arise from it, added to it a proport of Tinct Theb.

In this state [staid] upon stom without any inconv.

And so far from opr as purgat, that during use belly rathr bound

But at same time stomach comp very much dimin.

Had therefore reason to hope, that by persist in use, might obt. compl. removal.

    Directed therefore, contin of empl.

But since that, have seen nothing of patient.

And what has been cause of dissert. cannot pos. pretend to say

Am inclind howevr to hope, that has arisen from having no farther occas for assist

But from whatevr cause may have proceeded, renders any farthr obs. on case unnecss.
