    Robert Cowie

    1785

    Robt Cowie Febr 19 85

Of this patient since first pres. for him here have seen nothing.

As has hardly therefore been subj of pract. reckon it necess. to say but very little respect case.

Especially as in sympt nothing uncommon or pecul.

Can hardly however venture to add nothing alarming.

For although inclind to conject that fav termin has now taken place yet was not without doubts respc it at commen.

Affect consisted entirely in pain of breast, cough, dyspn & diffic expect. of viscid mucus.

In these have the sympt which occurr in very inst of catarrh

And when consider that affect had subs for space but of few days that attended with impaired appetite & consid thirst, could have no doubt in consid it as in acute state.

Such affect in no long time have in gener. even of themselves a fav. termin.

From these alone therefore should not have been appreh of danger.

But here to be remarkd that comb with distors of chest.

A circum, which has always been consid as giving praedisp. to Phth

And that affect here the rather to be dreaded, from remark palpit ment in case.

For from these joind with sever of cough in narrow & diff. breast had reason to be appreh that haemopt. might be induced.

At same time if sever of cough allayd had no less ground to hope for speedy recov.

Was with this intent then that had recourse to pract here empl

Directed the applic of a blister to paind part of breast.

From this hoped that if pain in any degree effect of intern inflam. might be mitig

That by giving determin to the part affected might allev. both cough & dyspn.

And that would give tempor allev of all sympt. by taking off affects of uncommon irritab.

While however thus aimd at mitig imagind also that might not be improp. to endeav to counteract effect of irrit causes.

And with this intent. had recours to a mucil. mixt.

To which as means of allaying dispos to inord action added a prop of the Tinct. Theb.

But whether these pract have been empl. or what affect has resulted from use have never learnt.

Reckon it however most prob. that affect had that fav termin which often occurs in catarrh even without aid of any med.
