    Ann Runciman

    1785

    Ann Runciman. Janr 22d 85

From hist of this patient case app that when applied for assist, here was subj to complic of affect.

Of these the first & what shall prob. also find most obstin, part of disease is pain of back.

To this we are told had been subj. for period of 15 years.

And then origin from spraining in conseq of violent exert.

A cause well known freq. to give rise to such compl.

And often even induc such a state, that continue for life

Or at least though subj to tempor remiss returning on slightest accid.

And this so much case with our patient, that renewed not only from attempts to lift weight but even from bending body, or posit in bed.

This however not entirely from first accident

To this height had arisen in conseq we are told of last deliv.

And this which of itself often a cause suff to induce these pains, might readily suppose capab of aggrav. them.

Here then would app, that very weak, & irrit state, induced in these parts.

But though this first, perhaps may also add most distress. & most obstin part of affect, yet by no means only disease.

Affected also to consid degree with Fluor albus.

Which although in greatest quant immed after menst, yet had now arisn to such height, as not to be absent during whole interval.

With this disch, well known that affect of syst. in diff ways often connected.

And partic not only freq. attended with disorders in alim canal, flatul & like, but also with pain of back.

To this therefore not improbab, that in part urgency of other compl. to be attrib.

But when consider period of comm can by no means & of encrease can by no means ascribe it altogeth to that cause.

And indeed not less probab. that injury to back in some degree cause of Fluor albus.

But still more should I be disp to ascribe it this latter disease, to change to which uterus subj, during last pregn.

For while freq. markd to be [induced] from this, to be obs. that almost first commen dated from that period.

May then upon whole consider these two parts of affect, pain of back, & Leucorrhoea, as having but little [con]

But if this the case with regard to these two, still less reason for susp. that either conn with third compl.

    Disch viz of Ascarides.

Had remarked that worms of this kind, had been disch by anus, for space of near ten years.

And although do not seem to have been prod of any great inconven, yet were at least a morbid affect which was desirab to remove.

And one too from which reason to appreh, that greater distress might soon arise.

Upon whole then, patients may be consid as subj to these diff. affec.

viz. Pain of back, Leucorrh, & Ascarides.

To enter fully into prognosis here would be requis that should make some observ. respect each.

But without descend to partic, may only in gener remark, that with regard to none of them, any ground for alarm.

And have even reason to hope, that of all, may be able to prod, if not radic, at least tempor. cure.

Must however be allowed, that from very triffling accid, will be apt to recurr.

And this partic to be appreh, both with regard to Fluor albus, & pain of back.

As patient thus subj to complic of diseases, partic pract. might be concl. to be necess, with regard to each.

And this accord case in pract here directed for patient.

Began treatm by directing the Infus Amar, to be taken by mouth & inject of lime water to be thrown into rectum.

The formr of these remed have often I think seen, attended with good conseq, in inst of Leucorrh.

The latter, one of most powerful means with which I am acquainted, of remov. ascarid.

While at same time, perfectly safe, & innocent.

In case before us, reason to presum that both remed attended, with desird affect.

For from time that she began use of infus, Fluor Albus consid dimin

And from very first inject, a large numb. of ascarid brought away

While during sev succeeding ones none obs.

Soon therefore became unnecess to contin use, & to this remedy can have no hesitat in attrib removal.

Have even been inclind to susp that also servicab in anoth partic

That has viz a share in remov. of Fluor albus.

For ceased in shorter period, than should have expected from bitter infus alone.

And reason I think for presum that an artic of the astring power of Lime water, may extend influ from rectum to uterus.

What has happ. therefore in this case will lead me to make trial of inject of Lime water in other inst of Leucorrh

But whether had any influ or not this compl. for time at least has ceased

And at last report only remaining affect was pain of back.

For this now empl. friction with anodyne balsam.

And hope that by means of it at least temp. ease may be obt.

If this however not the case is intent to direct here, drawing electr sparks from paind part.

For in a former inst where back simil affected from being overstrained was able by means of electr. to affect compl. cure after many other remed tried in vain

Hope therefore that may here be prod of same effect.

And that in no long time, may be able to dismiss patient free from all affect.

While however pain may baffle utmost efforts should not also be surpr. at recurr of former compl.

Partic of Leucorrh at succeeding menst period.

But even supp. this to happen have reason to hope that may again yeiled to repet of meas already empl.
