N^o13^th Novr 19. 1784

Donald Grantson at 60 Is troubled with severe pain in both his lower extremities. It begins at the ancles of both legs & from thence gradually ascends to the knee. In this situation it always is the most troublesome. It does not however terminate there but passes up the thigh till it arises about the pelvis. By this affection his lower extremities have become very stiff & not so ready in motion. About seven days ago the present complaint commenced. He says however it is not a new affection & that he has been frequently troubled with it before, but not for these two or three years past.

Cold is assigned as the cause of this affection but he has never used medicines.

Crem. Tart. ℥I M

cap. coch parv. ter de die. nec non habeat. Ungt. Terebinth ℥ii. illin paux. p. app. [dolent] om. m. & vesp.

27. Has taken the powder as directed. But it has produced no sensible operation. He has likewise applied the ointment & the pains in his lower extremities are now considerably easier but he complains much of pain in his head. P. Heat & belly natural. Cont. Med. u. a.
