    Margaret Drummond

    1784

    No17th June 11th 1784.

Margt Drummond at 30 complains of pains all over her body which are accompanied at times with a tendency to Syncope, & excessive weakness. She is affected also with a swelling & soreness both in the internal & external parts of throat. This affection is situated only on the left side

The internal soreness begins at the root of the tongue & extends about half way down the throat, while on the external part, she says it commences in her Ear, & extends to the glands of her throat which are at present greatly swelld. Menses have been in greater quantity than natural, & recurring at short intervals. She suspects that she had lately a miscarriage at a very early period of pregnancy. Belly regular appetite bad. Pulse 68.

About five weeks ago her complaint first appeard at which time the most obvious symptom, was a heaviness & load in the thorax attended with great dejection of spirits. Soon after this, the heaviness of her breast by degrees took possession of the sternum, & in a short time after, was converted into pain & [stiches] which fly in all directions over her whole body. Still however, there remaind a pain at the sternum which mounted gradually up to the throat & adjacent parts, & has now terminated in the present affection

She can assign no cause for her present complaints, but thinks they were in some degree brought on by grief, for the death of a sister

She has tried the application of a blister, but has used no other medicines
