    Donald Thomson

    (1783-1784)

    Donald Thomson. April 24th.

In case of this patient disease distinct markd by state of expect.

In conseq. of coughing has of late disch from lungs blood to consid extent sometimes in fluid sometimes in grum. state.

And though other sympt num yet little doubt that to this cause all of them to be attrib.

This affect need hardly obs. is one of very danger. nature.

And indeed perhaps even major of cases termin in Phthis & thus prove fatal.

Of such an event cannot be without dread in pres inst.

With view however both to prog & pract. of conseq to determ whether haemorr of active or passive kind.

And here from circum of case presumpt at least in fav. of latter.

Patient indeed not passd that period of life at which active Haem may be supp. to arise.

At same time much more freq. before than after 30th year a period which our pat. has already passed.

But besides this commen of bloody expect. here traced to an obv. accid.

The effect viz of a an emet operat with great viol.

Since that disch. supported by severe cough

And to this indeed, probab that irritat afforded by blood itself.

Here however even suppos. haemorrh. of passive kind still of conseq. that impet of circul. should be dimin.

For thus at least less force prop. blood through rupt. vessels.

Was with this view then that had recourse to powder of Crem of Tart both as gentle laxat & refrig.

But besides this seemd necess. to do something with view of giving constrict of rupt. vessels.

And as an astring here had recourse to infus. Rosar.

An artic which although [deriv] name from the Roses, yet has effic almost entirely from Vitr. Acid

And this need hardly obs one of most powerful astring we possess.

Both however with view to dilut & likewise to obt effect as a demul. conj it with prop. of mucil of G. Arab & water.

By this hoped that tend. to freq. cough might in part be dim.

But at same time still more affect to obt that end added a prop of the Tinct. Thebacai.

What has been affect of this mixt have not yet learned.

Am however hopeful that may at least have had effect of mitig affect for the pres.

At same time but too much reason to dread, that will in the end prove fatal to him from superv. Phthis
