    Peggy Brown

    1784

    Peggy Brown. April 24.

Disease of this patient chiefly markd by severe pains.

And with regard to nature of these some doubt.

From situat of some of them in joints [reason] for pres. that of Rheum kind.

And this suppos somewhat corrob. by swelling & redness, sometimes obs.

But on other hand again pains prin in parts not seat of Rheum.

For not only in head back & breast but also in lowest part of belly.

Was upon whole then disposed to view them as depend rather on pecul irritab than Rheum.

And this suppos. somewhat corrob. by gener. sense of coldness by tremb. fits & by trans. heat.

But still more by affect of disch of urine to which was subj

And may also prob consider as a sympt of same state that degree of delir to which are told was subjected.

Upon whole then disp. to consider, case of this pat. as well as that of some others already treated of as afford ex of Hyst. under form of Hyst Sympt.

And from this view although to be consid as free from danger yet would not be disp. to look for speedy fav termin.

And But at same time more hopes of this when consid that only of recent date.

And that chiefly app under form of pains.

For these perhaps more easily comb. than most other hyst. sym.

Here from idea given of disease naturally occurs as first obj. to obv. pains.

And in next place to prev [recur] by removal of that irritab. on which they depen.

Those intent of cure, applic here even on idea that affect of the Rheum kind.

For, must in that event suppo that was in state of irritab.

Hence then, remed empl. equally suited to both affect.

As means of allaying pain had recourse to Pil. Theb. effect of which entirely to be attrib to opium they cont.

And whatever diff opin. may be held as to action of opium, yet no one can deny, that is the most powerful means we possess, of allaying pain.

While from this expected mitig of pain with view of prev. return had recourse to combin of Zinc & Valer.

A compos. which as have already oftener than once had occas to observe have found prod of best effects as remov. morb. irritab.

Had here therfore reason to hope that by these med pres patient might be [relieved]

Since prescr. however have seen nothing of her.

But if returns to attend shall wish to cont course, till fully able to judge of effects.
