    Isabel Murray

    (1783-1784)

    Isabel Murray.

Concerning disease of this patient cannot I own from acct she has [give] of her compl form any certain or decided opin.

And now some suspic that shall have no opport of judging from farther observ.

For since first prescr. for her has not attend us

And not improb. that shall see nothing farther of her in this place.

Accord to her own gener. acct she lab. under an intermitt

But although repres. herself as affected with daily parox return at a partic hour yet descript by no means corresp. to that disease

For besides immense contin of coldness & tremb. for no less than space of 12 hours, is not succeeded either by hot or sweating fit.

Must therefore look upon it as entirely of diff nature

And as far, as could form any conject, was inclind to look upon it as a pecul modif of a hyster fit.

This idea somewhat fav. by symp of which affected at other times, partic what from descript may have concludd to be glob. hysteric.

And indeed all other sympt with which affected, as cough, dyspn, sense of tightness in thorax or like may have proceeded from same cause

This the rather probab. as cough without expect. which might have exp. if of catarrhal kind

Besides to be farther obs. that although fits of tremb. but of late date, yet cough commenced at same time with sensat of ball.

Both one & other being of six months durat.

On pres. affection however reckon it less safe to offer conject not only as but little chance of again seeing patient, but because not altog without suspic concern acct. given.

When saw this patient had some reasons for conject either that was desir of deceiving us or had [impos.] upon herself.

And that realy imagind what did not take place.

In these circum altog unnecss at pres at least to offer any conject with regard to progn.

If returns to attend, by what shall afterwards see may be [enabb] to form better opin

And in that case may perhaps take a future opport. of stating to you my sent more fully on this subj.

Shall at pres therefore concl with obs. that in pract. here directed went [chiefly] on idea that affect of the Hyst. kind.

Directed vomit with view of emptying stomach & checking regul period [return] of access.

And had recourse to pills of Cup. Ammon. with view to removal of that irritab, without which these access would not return.

But what has been effect of either have not been able to learn

And what will be our future pract if patient should return must be determined by accounts we shall then receive.
