This patient you will observe still at a very early period of infan. And hence incap of giving any acct whatever of feelings. From these circum often diffic to form any prop idea of compl. And no less so to have recourse to pract by which will be much benef. In case before us however several parts of affect were obv. In dyspnea & cough to which he was subj had evid catarrh symp While vomiting & looseness shewd also affect of alim canal. Had for my own part no doubt in consid both one & other of these as affects of cold. And that not merely proceeding from inclem of season but from coldness of habit. Can be no doubt that from both these affect inf. freq. cut off. And from aggrav of either a fatal conclus may yet occurr. But [neither] when came under our care to such height as to give much alarm. And from mitig of all sympt. which have now taken place may soon I think look for fav. concl. This I am inclind to think in some degree at least effect of treatm here empl. When came first under our care in exhausted state in which then was, freq. loose stools app to be one of most urgent sympt And to mere weakness indeed consid Dyspn as in part owing. Seemd in first place requis therfore that disch should be moder. [checkg]. And was with this intent that had recourse to a mixt of which the basis was Confect. Japon. This artic consider as one of mildest & safest astring to which can have recourse. But besides astring from extr. Japon, cont also a small prop of an opiate. And hence influ as allaying tend to inordin action in alim canal From use therfore expected mitig of vomiting, as well as of loosness. And with children in partic has often best effect in this way. In case before us attended I think with evid good conseq. For as soon as began use looseness dimin And in a short time entirely left him. This also, not only fav. change which took place For breathing also became much easier Had not however equal influ on vomiting. For still subjected to freq. attacks of this. While at same time cough [nothin] diminWhile at same timeWas likewise rather freq. tickling & short cough as expressd in hist, than app attended with much separat of mucus. To this cough was inclind to think that vomiting might in some degree be attrib. For besides what happens in cases of Pertussis no doubt that with inf. in partic the one inordin action apt to excite the other. In place therfore of Confect Japon which seemd no longer necess. had recourse to a mixt with a view to cough. As basis of this had recourse to mucil of G. Arab. diff in water From which as lubric fauces often best effects as allaying irrit there. But still more effect to obt this end added a small prop of Tinct Theb From this med however did not immed at least obt. desired effect. For at succeeding report found that cough & vomiting still contind. In other respects however patient contin much easier. And while no return of looseness app for food somewhat mended. Seemd unnecss therfore at least for some time to adopt any other meas. Hoped that by persist in empl. end in view might yet be accompl. And accord. at last report found that from contin of use had been free from vomiting. From persist in empl. espec if conj with milder weather which every day reason to expect, am in hopes that cough also may be removed. But if in this disapp. may try effects of Emet or blister But at same time with an inf. at so early period of life & so much exhausted as this has been shall be better pleased to avoid both.
