    Nelly Spalding

    1783

    No16th Decr. 5. 1783.

Nelly Spalding at 55. The skin of her left breast is rugous & pursed up in several places, resembling somewhat the corrugations of burnt leather. The breast is a little swelld & feels unequally hard but there is no discoloration or solution of continuity

She has two or three fits of [shooting] pain in it through the day And these become more frequent & violent in the night. The pains formerly extended to every part of that side. But since she has applied to the Dispensary & has used Cicuta & Camphorated oil they have been confined to the affected breast & even there the hardness is diminishd & the pains are become more easy.

Her courses have been absent these four years, in other respects she is perfectly well & has been always a healthy woman.

Eight years ago she first perceivd small moveable tumours about the size of white peas in different parts of her breast. These remained indolent & without any pain for four years. The pains when they did recurr were soon removed by the application of a whitish liquid. But these returning with the swellings which were never removed have become have become much worse within this last half year
