    William Dods

    1783

    I

Wm Dods. at 50, a labourer

    Octr 30th 1783.

Is affected with a praeternatural discharge of urine, passing it in the space of 24 hours to the extent of lb. VI It is of a greenish colour but is sweet to the smell & taste

He finds no difficulty in passing it, & it sometimes deposites a whitish sediment.

He is much emaciated, of a pale complexion & complains of general weakness, but particularly in the inside of his thighs & the calves of his legs, accompanied with a sense of coldness. He feels also remarkable weakness in the region of both kidneys which when he walks becomes painful & this pain strikes up to the top of his shoulders.

Tongue clean & rather white but he does not complain of thirst.

Pulse 92 & feeble. Appetite not immoderate. Belly regular & sleeps very well.

This affection commenced about fifteen weeks ago, & for three month he continued to discharge lb.20 in the 24 hours. But about three weeks ago the quantity began gradually to diminish so that on Tuesday last he only passd lb.10 on which day by advice he took a vomit, since which he has continued to pass only lb.VI. Formerly when the discharge was so great his thirst & appetite were immoderate. But since the quantity of urine has been decreasing they have both been less urgent. And since the vomit which he took on Tuesday last his thirst & appetite, are become almost natural. He attributes his disease to hard labour by which means he excited a profuse sweating, & in this state he drank a large quantity of cold water, & in about a week afterwards the present symptoms appeared. He has used no medicines excepting the vomit.

Both vomits operated well, but on Friday last he was attacked with severe looseness which he ascribes to cold. It continued for about three days & during that time [he] urine was but in small quantity of a high colour & without any sweet taste. The discharge by the belly however is now natural & his urine has again acquired the sweet taste, though it is neither in so large quantity nor so light coloured as formerly.
