Disease to which this patient subj. somewhat of compl. nature. Was subj. to cough & dysp. with such a state of expect. as evid [shewd] a catarrhal affect. And this as is indeed commonly the case with such affect begun during the winter. But besides these subj also to an affect of later date. Pains viz in diff parts of body but partic in the back, the neck & the head. These compl. when came under our care, of about ten days standn & attrib to cold. From these diff circum, could have no doubt in consid them as of the Rheum kind. When however so free from [feverr] were necess. led to view them as dep. rather on pecul. irritab. than on state of active inflam. From this idea of affect, naturaly led to form fav. progn. For even from season of year alone reason to hope for recov. While by this also ground to expect that catarh affect would be dimin. For nothing more common than to find such compl. although period return during winter, yet altogeth removed during summer months. Hoped therefore that even without aid of med, both affect would soon be termin. At same time by prop. meas. had reason to expect, that this might at least be somewhat acceler. Of the two compl. we have ment the Rheum was evid the most urgent. This therefore claimd first [cause] And as means of dimin irritab & allev. pain had recourse to most powerful sedat with which am acquainted use viz of Opium. This taken to extent of gr. at bed time had effect not only of mitig pain but also of allev. cough. Had hopes therefore, from first trial, that by contin, cure might soon be accompl. But while allev cough had reason also to appreh. that would tend to check disch. under form of expect to which syst.longfor some time been habit. While also well known to have influence as binding belly. From both these consid then led to conj. with it use of a gently lax elect. formed of Crem Tart & Sulph Though this however had effect of open. belly & though cough much mitig yet headach cont. By this led to applic of Blister And in conseq of free disch at last report found headach much allev. At same time however elect had rather more effect than could have wished in open belly. This therefore as well as Op. was directed to be intermittd. And have put him on use of Red Peruv. Bark from which hope will soon be able to dismiss him free from all compl.
