    Hamilton Bowie

    (1783)

    Hamilton Bowie. May. 28.

Respect. disease to which subj not altogeth without doubt

At same time think it at least highly prob. that lab. under Leucorrh.

And on this idea treatm has hitherto proceeded.

Here only doubt with regard to disease is whether affect Leucorrh or Gonnorh.

Prin. morbid app. here taking place disch viz of yellow matter from Vagin in comm to both.

And must be allowed that some other circum here more freq occurs in Gonnorh than in Leucorrh.

This partic the case with diff in retaining [urine]

And still more with respect to heat in disch it.

Both these partic the last very common sympt in Gonnor.

And indeed ardor urinae one of [mos] distress sympt of that disease.

While however thus almost const in Gonnor. not unfreq also in Leucor.

For evid that must always hap. wherever mucus acquires such state as to be incap of afford due [illegible] [illegible] urine

This howevr very gener. case [when] though quantity encr. loses [illegible] [cons]

Hence then not surpriz that should often occur in Leucorrh.

But besides this ardor urinae here also often from anoth cause.

By matter disch. parts to which app. excor & inflamed.

This often even so much the case in Leucorh. that very consid ulcerat about labia pudend

Hence then no object to suppos. that disch here leucorrh. from [affected] [area]

While in support of that opin. many circum in the case which not attend of Gonnorh. & almost const. in Leucorrh.

This may be obs. with respect to pain of back & loins.

And likewise with respect to [affec] of alim canal. flatul. acid. &e.

To these to be added duration of affect.

For has now we are told contin for space of year.

A circum at least very rarely happ. in Gonnor. but often in Leucorrh.

And last of all some weight to be given to pat. own assert.

For although on her acct of disease cannot put absolute reliance yet if susp. compl. to be vener. could have little reason for conceal it.

And desire of cure might suppose would be suff. motive for telling us the truth.

On these grounds then disp to pron. disease of patient Leucorrh

Here however one singul to be mentiond

What respects viz state of Menst disch.

With our patient menst flux regul in point of time but scanty in point of quantit.

In most inst howver the contrary of this takes place.

And with Leucorrh a dispos even to menorrhagia.

And that both as indic by excess. disch at once & freq. return.

Hence then may be consid as [havin] in this respect some variety from ordin course of affect.

At the same time to be lookd upon as a variety only.

For cannot be consid as an occur never taking place.

Cases not unfreq. where there seems even to be no connect. between menst disch & that of Fluor albus

And accord. cases where latter goes on not only during menst flow, but also during periods of pregn & nursing when mens entirely stopt.

There however reason to believe that disch entirely from vagina.

And from circum of ardor urinae not improb. that this a good deal the case with pres. patient.

But even where disch from uterine vessels subj also to varieties.

And although gener. most excess immed after menst. sometimes only preced. that evac.

In other cases again supplies as it were place of menses.

And for disch of red blood period return of disch of white mucus.

These then varieties still more consid than what take place in pres inst.

And from what here occurs no partic conclus either with respect to nature of disease or prognosis.

With regard indeed to latter is a circum rather fav. than otherwise.

For argues at least that vessels of uterus cannot be subj to very great degree of morbid laxity.

But independ of this partic, circum of the case taken altogeth, rather fav.

Is indeed true, that Leucorrhoea often an obstin disease.

And that even where app. very slight, will resist utmost efforts of art.

Should not therefore be very great disapp. if endeav to cure here shall fail.

But youth of patient much in her favour.

And is also so that affection but of late date.

Has subs. only for space of a year which with Leucorrh. may be consid as a recent case

During that time has prod no great affect of syst.

For although pain of back & stom compl. yet not even that pecul paleness which attend of disease.

To these circum may also be added that disease supp. to have origin from excess. fatigue.

A partic much more favourable than if had occurrd without any obv. cause.

Upon whole then, though [cannot] speak very posit, yet here I think ground to hope for success & even speedy terminat.

For effect this end on suppos that disease depends on deprived [illegible] from pecul lax of vessels have had recourse to an astring.

And as such have empl. Alum. Need not obs. that this artic consist of Vitriol acid united to pecul earth.

That from this combinat activ of acid so far restr that can be taken with ease.

But still however in such a state as to furnish one of most powerful astring of Mat. Med.

Accord is basis Pulv. Stypt for intern use, Ag. Stypt for extern &e.

But besides bloody often also advan empl for restr. muc. disch.

And accord. have freq. used it in cases of Leucorhoea, & if not much mistaken often with success.

Without empl of any other [illegible] was here therefore intent to trust case to this.

Gave it in combin with valer. princip with view to prop. form.

But in some degree also with view to flatul & other stom compl.

In this state have at least found that does not disagree with stom.

And that too even after dose of alum augmented.

Under use affect affect already consid mitig.

Gives therefore greatr reason to hope that by contin cure may be affected.

But during this anothr occurr has taken place requir some attent

When patient came first under care slight erupt. of small herp. pust. obs. about hands.

So inconsid however that not reckoned necess to introd it into hist

But at last report was found that encreased very much.

From this erupt. patient not affectd with any pecul uneasy itchy senst.

But from app. as well as [return] had little doubt in concl. it to be an ex of Psora.

And as such most readily cured by an extern applic

With this view directed at last report the Ungt Vitriol.

Consist of ℥i of Vitr. Acid in ℥I Ax.

An ointm in my opin of consid [great] strength than Ungt Antipsor.

And to which hope that this affect will soon yield.

If alum same affect on Leucorrh patient may soon be in condit to be dismissd.

But if either these expect. disapp. or new app. take place, must have recourse to pract accomod to condit of patient.
