    Janet Armourer

    (1782-1783)

    Janet Armourer

Sympt to which this patient subj when came under care not num

Consisted entirely in affect of alim canal.

And there chiefly under form of vomiting with pecul. acid & bitter taste.

Besides which inconven. also from flatul at least in bowels.

From these circum then, though vomiting most urgent sympt, yet better disting by title of Dysp. [than] of vomitus.

Those stom compl. comm. distin by title of Dysp. in general at least no less obstin. than comm. Hence then in giving prognos of pres. case, might have been [inferd] that would not soon be termin.

+ For although now in some degree subj to it for near space of year, yet in most inst of Dyspep. may be consid as a recent case.

Had taken place at a season [whr] stom of young people very apt to be [overlod] viz. about begin of Janr

And I own if had stated opin at time when patient came under our care would have been less favour. than has realy turned out to be the case.

At same time can be no doubt that several circum very fav.

Disease when she came under our care but of very recent date not at least of very long standing

    >+

Presumpt. therfore that had arisen from som accid cause, operat of which, would soon cease or parts even had alr. entirely ceased.

Pres. affect compl. connected with no other disease, & had in no degree prod any gener. affect of syst

Farther to be obs. that in the case nothing urgent.

For though vomiting freq. yet not with any pain.

Hence then reason to presume that mere effect of uncom irrit than of [any] other circum

From this however much less to be appreh. than where conseq. of relaxed & weakened state of stom.

On these grounds then should have been inclind to consider case as a fav. one.

At same time hardly expected that would so soon have had fav. termin.

This termin have little doubt in ascrib to practice here empl.

This however will more partic app. in speaking of diff. remed. which were used.

First artic directed was the Per. Bark.

This well known to be one of best tonic med of the Mat. Med.

And while by interv of stomach has very great influ on syst in general can be no doubt will act to most consid degree on that viscus itself.

But operat in this way could not be immed expected.

Hence then, necess. to do [somethin] with view to obt. retent of alim in stom, & to prom digest.

These intent where weakness of stomach exist, not unfreq. obt. by aid of hot [illegible].

For by means of these oper. as stimulus, acts with greater vigour & natural peristal. motion augm.

Was with this intent then that mustard & pepper directed to be taken with food to consid prop.

But while disapp. of effects lookd for from these, could expect as little from affect of stomach Bark.

For while food very soon vomited, bark almost never retaind for such length of time that could expect any effect from it.

In this situat however would have been in vain to persist in use

Had recourse therefore to a remed from which expected if not same tonic powers yet more influ as allaying inord action viz Conf or Electuar. Japon.

In this artic, with the Succus Japon as astring, are conjoind diff veget aromat.

And to this is added a small prop of Opium.

From this combin may naturall look for good effects as allaying inordin action.

    Partic in aliment. canal.

Accord am acquainted with very few remed. from which have seen more benef. in restraining Diarrh

And have often also found it remark serviceable in [allaying] [vomit]

In pres. inst howevr from use of this as well as former artic was disapp.

For notwith use vomiting after food still contin.

And even med itself seldom retaind on stom.

From this concl. morbid irritat so great. more powerful means of [allaying] it were necess.

And accord. had recourse to Opium in more consid quant.

Gave it under form of liquid Laud, diff in Mint water.

From very first doses, good effect obt.

And by contin for no long time vomiting entirely ceased.

After patient had contin free from it for near space of [forthnig], [recknd] farther attend unnecess.

Hence then little doubt either in attrib. cure to [illegible] or in referring disease to pecul. morbid irritab.
