    Mary Stevenson

    (1782)

    Mary Stevenson.

Most distress sympt in this patients case affections of alim canal & pains in diff parts of body.

These however can have no doubt in attrib to an uterine affect.

In some degree to excess. menstrual discharge but still more to succed. Leucorrh.

These encreased disch. naturally to be ascribd to accid to which uterus subj.

Partic to injury sust. by repeatd abort.

From this circum more reason to dread affect obstin than if conseq. merely of loss of tone.

At same time no circum [portend] immed or even fut danger.

No reason to susp. schirros, cancer or even ulcerat of uterus.

At least of these no indic in any fixd pain or other sympt with which in general attended.

Hope therfore that by prop mean allev if not removal of disease may be obt.

And although cannot say that hitherto any great progr. yet may be affected by contin of same course.

In treatm hitherto followed have you will obs. had two obj in view.

The restorat of tone to uterine vessels, & the obv. [constip].

Was with first of these intent that had here recourse to powdr of alum, comb. with pulv. Cretac.

Alum I need hardly observe is one of best astring.

Its basis vitriol acid one of most powerful with which yet acquainted.

And in state of powder empl. both in cases of bloody & serous disch.

For most part however, combind with some other artic to give form

Here both with that intent, & likewise as [adjuv], had recourse to Pulv. Cretac.

Which partic indic by prevailing acid at stom.

Well known however, that acid on stom, a very powerful cause [relax] tone.

Hence then, here the more necess to destroy it, both for relief of patient, & for aiding operat of alum.

Besides this, as aiding cure, was necess also to keep belly regul.

With this view, had recourse to Pil. ex Colocynth cum Aloe.

And by contin of these med, hope affect. will be overcome
