    John McLean

    (1782)

Compts of John McLean, princip consisted in pains in belly & back with borborigmi.

And when these severe was affected with giddiness & pain of head.

Could have no doubt in viewing all these sympt as arising from wind.

And accord to his affect would give name of Flatulentia.

For no sympt in case which may not I think be attrib to that cause.

Besides sympt mentioned indeed some others enum in hist of affect.

Such for ex. as diffic in making water.

But this also can have no hesitat in attrib to flatul.

Readily expl. from compress of distended intest on bladder & urin [passa]

Accord. freq. found to arise from that cause.

And among vulgar in this country such affect here commonly known by title of windy gravel.

View all sympt then as here proceeding from flatul. had no reason to form an unfav. progn.

Although distress. yet unless when lands in Tympan, seldom a danger. disease.

And this only conseq of very great loss of tone, tending even to paralys. of intest.

Of such however no app in pres case.

From begining therefore had reason to hope that would soon be allev.

But here any farther observat on progn unnecss as case has already had fav termin.

And this no doubt in attrib [at] to consid degree to med here employd.

Had recourse here to combin of aloes & assafoetid.

Hoping from first to promote free disch of faecul. matter & from last to give free disch of wind.

In these affects were not disapp.

For from commn use borboryg. much diminishd.

And although headach in some degree remaind yet yielded to contin of med.

And in short time dismissd cured.
