    Mary Rawlinson

    (1782)

    Mary Rawlinson

Of case of this patient very little to observe

From hist of affect indeed as introd into regist would app [that] lab. under compl. of affect.

In sickness at stomach with headach had evid of a dysp. affect.

In cough with viscid expectorat had evid of a catarrhal compl.

While spasm affect of oesophag. probab. an hyster sympt.

To all these, farther to be added, an uterine affect.

As indic by irregul. of menst disch, & fluor albus.

But although all these sympt might in some degree exist, yet had reason to pres. that were to no great degree & that patient repres of affect rather exaggerated.

And since applied for assist have seen very little of her.

While at same time this irregul. has not proceeded from her being unable to attend us.

At commen of disease could not prop to form any opin of termin.

And now as much at a loss as ever.

Yet may venture to assert that in app. which this case at pres. exhib nothing singul. alarming.

And that by proper attent, reason to hope, that in short time may be soon freed from greatest part if not from all of them.

In pract could not at first [direct] endeav to every part of affect.

From remed employd however will observe that attent turned to affect of alim canal.

Hoped that by strength stom. both sickness & headach might be removed.

This purp however not more effect answ. by any med than by veget bitters.

And these accord have very commonly got name of stom. med.

Had here recourse to one of [purest] & best of veget bitters viz Gentian.

For this may justly be consid as basis of Inf. Amar.

The small prop of Orange skin & corriand seed which enters it [rather] to be viewd in light of corrig. than any thing else.

This however with pres patien thought might with advant be still farther encreasd.

And accord added prop of Tinct [Arom]

[By] which while rend more warm & grateful to the stom medic virtues improved.

Besides this however was necess. also to counteract costiveness.

For nothing more effect in [supp] stomach compl. than cont of this

While with this view resolvd to have recourse to aloes, imag. that some addit adv. might be obt. by empl at same time assafoetid against hyster sympt

By this determ to employm. of Pil. Foetid cum Aloe from which hoped that both intent would be answered.

After these med ordered saw nothing of patient for some time.

But when did return was with a new complaint

Were informd that after began use of med disch a great numb of worms from descript of Ascarid kind.

Here two quest naturally pres. themselves.

How far viz these worms were cause of other sympt.

And how far disch occured from med here empl.

On both conject might be offered.

But these unwilling to risk till shall learn something farther with tolerab cert. respect case.

In mean time have ordered one of most powerf. med against ascarid with which I am acquaintd

Use of lime water viz in way of inject.

If duly empl. have little doubt that will remove this part of affec

And of compl. which shall then be found to remain if pat. contin attend, which not indeed very probab. shall may then speak with more confid.
