    Elizabeth Brown

    (1782)

    Eliz Brown.

Of disease of this patient very little room for doubt.

Several of sympt indeed as affect of breathing, pain of back, weaknss tremb of limbs & the like may proceed from diff causes.

But in pres case can have no doubt in attrib them to state of menstr disch.

This evac both prof in point of quantity & return also at uncom short period.

In place of interval of month seld absent for more than 15 days.

Not surpr. then that menorrhagia to such a degree should have induced all other sympt in this case.

These well known to be very generally the attend of it.

And indeed no sympt which may not with confid attrib to it.

While thus no doubt in giving name of Menorrhagia to pres disease as little with regard to cause to which to be attrib.

Was we are told, the conseq. of a miscarriage.

A circum from which every day obs. to arise.

And indeed not surpr. when consid to what uterus then subj.

Accord from this cause Menorrh very generally of passive kind

Arises from want of due resist. to impetus of blood at uterine vesse

When however even thus induced yet after becomes habit cannot be checkd without very great inconven.

Hence even although had it in power to encr. resist to full degree requis. yet could not give cert. progn.

For hard to say what might be conseq of suppress of disch.

And of such the rather ground to entert appreh in pres case from sympt by which told each evac preceeded.

For some days prev to disch is affected with sickness at stomach altern with hot & cold fits.

These prob to be ascribd to accum of blood then taking place in uter. vessels.

And although disch excess. yet indic that the throwing it off in some degree necess for relief of syst.

Hence then attempts to restr. it may be prod of conseq. no less [freq] than disch itself.

From these consid cannot here speak with certainty of being able to accompl. cure.

And the rather to be doubted from disease having already cont. for space of sever. months.

Yet has by no means been of such contin that as to give reason to appreh that may not be success. removed.

Nor has it taken place to such extent that fatal conseq to be dreadd.

Upon whole then hope that may be able if not to remove at least to allev affect of patient.

This cheifly to be expected from use of gentle astring & tonics.

And to such you will observe have already here had recourse

Began treatm by putting patien on use of one of most powerful astring with which I am acquainted vizr use of Vitriol Acid.

This however hitherto employd only in small quantity.

Have used it under form of Elix. & that very consid diluted.

From this was inclind to think that nothing to be appreh.

And at same time hoped that might be prod of some effect.

Accord had effect of [postpone] [prn] of disch at least for short time.

In place of 15 had intrm of about 20 days.

But at end of that time disch returnd.

And evac took place to usual ext.

From this therefore led to think of some other meas.

While at same time from what had already happened, encour. to hope that would be attended with no bad effec

From these consid was induced to conj with contin of Elix the use of Peruv. Bark.

This directed to extent of ℥ii in day.

And mean that should be regul contin during course of next interv.

From these tonics & astring hope both that interval may be protractd & disch dimin.

And if this the case patient in other respects will recov health.

But if should not be affected by these, still inclind to think that is from tonics & astring that benef to be expected.

And to pres. may subst. trial of others.

As for example Alum & cold bathing.

But in admin of these must be directed by circum of case at time.

And if eithr inadvis or unsucces future pract must be regulated by state in which shall then find complaints.
