    DEP/DUA/1/28/21 (Transcript version)

    Hugh Ritchie

    (1781-1782)

Have already deliv sentim at some length on cases of 34 patients who stand first in order of list

And period of sess. has now arrived at which has formerly been pract to concl. this part of busin for Wint Sess.

In place therfore of entering into more full consid mean to empl. pres. lect. in giving short view of other cases subj of pract here, of which have hitherto said nothing.

    Hugh Ritchie.

Disease consisted in freq. loose stools.

Although these with slimy disch gripes tenesm & some degree of fever, yet no hesit in consid it as an inst of Diarrhoea.

This determin did not merly form from abs. of blood in stools.

For although such disch had occurd would not have altered opin of dis.

For here wanted that fever that fever which concom. perhaps rather great constit of Dysent.

No susp. that disease receivd from contag.

No reason to believe that capab. of being propag by such a cause.

These however look upon as being the circum essent to dysent.

And from here viewing affect as Diarrhoea opin of termin much more fav.

Already even consid it as being on decline

For after having subs for ten days stools now less thin & copious.

Hence then though not perhaps less distress than at first, yet still consid it, as now depend on abraded & irrit state of intest.

In this situat no hesit. in having recourse to the use of an astring.

By which hoped that looseness [migh] be restr & vig of parts restored.

Imag. however that effects still more consid, if tend to inord action dimin.

And with this intent thought of conj. it with a prop. of a sedativ.

These then circum which here directed me, to use of Infus Japon, with a prop of Laud. Liquid.

But prev to empl. directed an Emet.

As thus from evac of alim canal action would be more consid.

While at same time might remove sordes from stom, which if prop down would augm the disease.

What however has been effect of these med have not learned.

For since patient got them have seen no more of him in this place.
