    Unnamed Unnamed

    (1780)

For with out regul. disch by belly may expect that stom compl in spite of every meas will cont obstin.

And few meas more effect in allev. these than the keeping belly gently open.

With this intent then had recour to use of Aloes.

Which in most habits at least one of most conven & best purgat in such cases.

But here also with same intent as ment. above, thought it advis to conj. Aloes with Assafoetid.

And therefore here directed use of Pil. Foetid cum Aloe a med which have already oftener than once had occas to ment.

From commen. of this course patients sympt very consid [relievd]

But after contin for space of [forthnig] had again some return of vomiting

In this affect, as have just obs. consid remov of morbid state on which depends as more to be affected by [regim] & course of life, than by partic med.

By this means best chance both of restor due mobilit & counteract occas cause.

Recourse then had to med cheifly with view of obv. urgent sympt.

And with this intent prescript for pres patient princip directed.

Began by direct. for patient a mixt of Tinct. Fulig & Infus. [Amar]

This will readily suppose prin intended with view to affect of alim can

Utilit of veget bitters as prom digest well known.

In few artic purer or stronger bitter than in gentian, the basis of infus amar.

Which not only one of best modes of exhib it, but where virtues improved by veget aromat Cort. [Aurant] & [Sem] [Corrin]

Hoped therefore that might have some influ as restrain vomit & promot digest.

In case however where so much disch from wind & where reason to susp torpor, imag these advant might be encreased by addit stim, of foetid Gen

With infus amar therrefore conj. a proport of Tinct. Fulig.

An artic deriv name & perhaps in some meas also medic virtues from soot.

But perhaps still more of activ depend on Assafoetid.

Which of all the Foetid gums is unquest most active.

From this conj. then hoped that advant from veget bitters might be improved.

But while these empl. with view to flatul. vomiting & indigest, seemd also necess. that meas should be taken to obv. costiv.

Now however not attended with same distress flatul as formerly.

But in place of this accom with copious erupt, giving very itchy sensat

This fresh compl. as have already observd no uncommon occur in Hyster

And when does occur in such cases in gener I appreh to be attrib to want of free disch.

And indeed would in general seem, that in this disease, very great irregul in all disch.

In this situat former med on longer partic indicated

What now seemd most advis meas was to prom free disch by surface.

At same time however still thought it necess. to keep belly gently open.

With latter of these intent had now recourse to elect. of cream of Tart with [Sulph]

And with former empl. crude Antim reduced to fine powder.

An artic from use of which in cutan affect. have often I think seen best effect.

Partic in cases where nature of erupt such that no reason to susp local disease on surface.

And where ground for appreh that topic applicat attended with bad [conseq]

From this course, obv operation such as had reason to expect.

While elect. gently moved belly, from antimon, moder diaph. some even some sweat induced

With this operat. erupt. soon dimin.

And although did not unif. decline yet in short time space of few weeks almost entirely gone.

While at same time so far free from other sympt. that farther cont of med seemd unnecess.
