    Betty Bell

    (1780-1781)

    Betty Bell

Affect of this patient consists of severe pains at diff parts of body.

Now however partic seated in head & leg

And in these parts an obv cause from which arise

    Exostos viz of bone.

This, patient herself ascribes, & prob with just, to vener affect

And although inclind to think, that by some pract, latent pox much more freq consid as cause of disease than ought to be done, yet have no doubt in consid pres as of that nature.

When admit this however would still be understood to say that that consid it rather as conseq of Leuc than depend immed on Syph [varies]

And in this view cure more ted.

For cannot as when latter the case depend on cure by means of Merc.

On contr. has in some such inst been obs that mercur. course has encreased severity of pains.

From this reason then with pres patient resolvd to try other med.

And hope at least to see what may be done by these without use of Mercury.

For this purpose have at pres. put patient on course of Mezer.

And that may more cert obt effects given in [subt.]

Taken at first to quantity of [six] grains in day at two diff doses

But such stim power on alim canal that oblige to reduce it to single [dose]

And even to reduce that to gr ii

In this quantity born without uneas

And seemd for some time to have effect of giving very consid mitig

But since at last report found that pain consid aggrav.

And since that patient has had still more severe return

More doubtful therefore how far shall by this be able to accompl. cure.

At same time such return, no reason why should drop trial.

And although progr to recov not unif. may yet in end prove successful

Is still therefore intent under pres or some other form to contin use.

And hope, shall yet afford us inst of good effects of it.

At same time in pres situat of patient do not mean to employ Mezer. alone

Is now intent to contin it in conj with med just spoken of [Hyosci]

And from this combin hope that shall be able if not entirely to remove affect, at least to rendr it more tolerab.

If this also unsuccess. shall have recourse to topic meas. till after usual period for winter course elapsed.

Besides patient already spoken of still sev others on list.

Remarks on cases of these howevr, as course now draws to conclus. [canno] prop to overtake, during winter session

Some of them may perhaps transf to regis for summer course when will be begun about first week in May

And shall concl. case lectures for pres winter session, with some [remark] on few of cases which have termin under care since last spoke of them
