    John Brown

    (1780)

    John Brown.

Of this patient compl. the greatest part are obv.

Consists of erupt of Herpet kind under axilla.

To this without its arising from any obv. cause, patient has now been subj for space of month.

But for some time at least, no appear of its affecting health in any other respect.

But of late to this erupt, has been super added anoth sympt

A period headach viz return regul every morning, & contin with viol for space of sever hours.

Here not impossib that this might have been connected with other part of affect.

At same time reckond it more probab. that totally unconnected

And was inclind to consider it, merely as an accid combin.

Such period headachs by no means uncommon.

Partic as constit what may be calld anom interm sympt.

For often such period headachs occurr, when hardly any other sympt of fever.

Partic as preceeding conseq of a regul. interm.

Although such howver had not here occurred, yet was inclind to consid it as of this nature.

And when is so, in gener. more easily removd than any regul interm.

This however for most part at least within power of med.

And partic as occurring in this country.

Hoped therefore that this part of affect would neither prove ted. nor danger.

Sentim not more unfav with regard to other part

For although erupt of herpet kind not unfreq very obstin, yet here but compar speaking of short contin.

Had not resisted power of any of those med, by which probab. that migh be combated.

And had appar no tend to that state in which found most obstin to resist means of cure.

That is where puts on dry & scaly appear.

Upon whole therfore, hoped that in no long time, might be freed from affec

Of this compl. howevr reckond erupt, under arm to be that which first claimd attent.

And imagind that most effect combat by topic applic.

While howevr from curing this put stop as it were to accust. disch. became necess to employ some means of compens this evac

Was with this intent therefore that directed meas, to which on commen treatm of this case had here recourse.

Antim in its crude state, employ as means of giving determin to [surfa]

And thus [proport] by [illegible] [thus] a more free disch.

This affect have I think in many such inst observd to result from use

And is thus I appreh. that found to have consid effect in giving smooth & silky appear to skin of Horses.

A purp for which often empl. by the Farriers.

While [there] however expected that disch would be compen, became necess to dimin action of vessels at part.

For this purp. had recourse to solut of Sach. Saturn.

Under this means med treatm erupt soon changed for better.

Still however headach remaind as before.

A circum which consid as afford farther proof that unconnected with erupt

From sentim respecting it here nat led to trial of Emet.

Since that however have heard nothing more of patient.

At same time probab. that this has been conseq of his being now also freed from this compl. as well as formerly from erupt.
