(1779-1780)
Bell McPherson.
Was but very short time under our care till dismissd free from affect At same time cure could not be consid as conseq of any meas which we here employd. And indeed only meas taken were with view of obv. sympt not meant for radic cure of disease. Selected this patient on presump that was to treat a case of Ammen And that too in most simple & uncompl. state. Here compl. to which subj. pain of breast, diff of respir, pain of head & sleepiness, such as occurr in many diff aspect. And among others very common sym in Ammen. To thiscausesource in inst before us had little diffic in attrib them. For patient from commen of disease, had in this respect been very irregul. During 12 months were told that had appeard only twice, & that too in small quantit. While for sever. months before came under our care, had been entirely wanting. Of such obstruct, well known, that sympt ment. in case of our patient, one of most common consequences. Here then little doubt that connectd as cause & effect. And that ammen was affect under which our patient laboured. Before came under care, could not be said to have obstin resisted remed. For excepting vomit, are informd that none had been used. Disease however, accord to account had already cont for consid length of time And would appear at least that efforts of [syst] inadeq for removal. From this then led to concl. that should probab. find it an obstin affect. In this however soon appeard that were mistaken. And that too without aid of any med to which could be attributed. For here before entering on any plan of cure for Ammen, wishd to have [case] at least for week or two [under.] As during that time might have better opport of judging whether real or pretended. Or rather whether obst. diseased state or effect of pregn. This as had occas to observe in case of Mary Monro always to be partic regarded. And there, notwith very plausib story that was told us, now appear that too much ground for what then suggested as possib suppos. For after deserting us, went to the Infirm. There however cont also but for short time And is only since left the hospit that compl. have been entirely [removd] from being deliv of a child. The freq of such cases, must give susp in every inst. And accord. with pres patient, before prescrib any active med, wishd to have opport of making some farther inquir at diff times resp. sympt. In mean while as a refrig cathart, prop to give repeated doses of Sal Gla And by this hoped that some of symptom might be alleviated.By this hopedPartic that headach as well as drowsiness might be mitigated. And that thus though did not cure might allev compl. But soon after first dose had a return of menstrual disch. A conseq which could not reason attrib to this med. And which had any active med been employd would have been with injust attrib to it. Is however on such accid coincid, that reput of many [illegible ] founded. What was cause of return of flux here cannot pretend to conject. But whatever it was, as accord to repres. flowed to usual extent farther attend here became necess. And that the rather as, drowsiness excepted was at same time freed from all other sympt. A circum serving among others to corrob opin offered with regard to the case.
