    George Burril

    (1779-1780)

    George Burril.

Exhib exam of a disease by no means uncom

    Univ allowed in nature obstin

And when of long contin in gener consid as incurab.

    Yet many remed highly extolld.

And power in cert. cases at least consid.

Hence the [ascert.] effects of these or discov others an obj of conseq.

And with this intent here selected.

Here no hesit in assert that dis Epil

Wanted indeed what commonly consid as charact marks

    viz Foaming at mouth.

Must be allowed that when fits [severe] a very common sympt

And indeed as but rarely absent some foundat for opin of being [pathog.]

Yet much more sentim of vulgar than of regul pract

And With them very gener. admittd that neither pecul to Epilep nor occur in every inst.

And if wanting in case now before us other circum by which here charact.

From gener. app. viz falling to ground & superveen convuls. two dis only with which could be conf.

    Hysteria & Convulsis.

But from both suff. disting by state of intell. facul.

On recov. no recollect of what done to him during fit

And even no knowl. of having ever been affected

Evid proof of totall abol. of sense.

And this with just I think to be [consid] as great disting mark of Epilep.

Besides this if necess. other marks might be pointed out, partic as disting pres disease from Hyster.

For to convuls. very little [resemb]

    But what already ment. suff.

And holding it Epilep progn. can on no acct be favour.

Is indeed true that cannot be consid as an obstin disease to which constit long habit

For had subsist only for some months

And when consid how seldom fits at first attackd might be consid even as but recent inst.

Still however even in slightest form an obstin disease.

Patient at very advan period when [recov] from any effect more diffic.

His gener appear. by no means healthy

Has full bloated habit with soft & flabby apn.

Under these unfav circum disease [since] commen has had rapid increase in powr of severity.

And although at first interv. for months yet when came under our care seld a day without a fit.

In these circum then prosp of recov. had pat. even cont under care could not be very great

But since first prescr. for him at this place has not again returnd to us.

Hence then med empl. could not even have that chance which necess

Superf. then to offer any farther observ

May only observe that [prev] to use of any other med reckond it necess to evac prim viae.

And with this intent had recourse to Comp powder of Jallap.

After this meant to have given full trial to calx of Zinc with Valer.

But as have never since seen pat unnecss to make farther remarks with regard to it or to ment. what other meas might have been tried if had faild.

May only add that if return is intent to pros use of Zinc.
