    Margaret Inglis

    (1779-1780)

    Margt Inglis

Sympt to which this patient subj numer & diversif.

But all I appreh. to be consid as refer. to one genus of disease.

Have little hesit in consid case of this patient as exhib to us a strick & in some respects singul inst of Hysteria.

And notwith fits of invol. [laught] yawing, term, palpit &e would consid it rather as an example assemb. of Hys sympt than as consist in hyster fits

Of these sympt. some at least partic the mental affect. rather uncommon occur.

For from acct given us would appear that at first state of delir occured appr. even to insania.

Can hardly however be much aston at any variet which this disease puts on.

For these in diff cases of very great diversity.

And if in some cases of such nature that seem to be much more serious than others, so to be rememb. that in every inst affect much more alarm than danger.

If threatn appear of sympt migh give rise to some appreh. so from short durat of compl. greater reason to hope for recov.

And am in hopes that under our care compl. of this patient may at least be allev if not removed.

Meas. hitherto employd with this case intended with two views.

Have had recourse to sedativ as means of immed obviat sympt.

And to tonics with view of prev. [return]

With first intent had here recourse to use of Extract of Hyosciam.

An artic from which am persuad that many of the narcot effects of opium may be obt.

While at same time on two acct seemd to be here preferab.

First as having tenden. rath to open than bind belly.

And 2ndly as having effect to quite confus of head & tenden to delir which by opium often very much encreased.

While from these circum appeard advis in pres. inst may venture to say, that have not been disapp. in effects

And from use at bed time to extent of only gr ss. quiet & sound sleep procured.

Imag. that by repit of dose in morning sympt might in simil manner by allev.

But from narcot effect as inducing sleep in day time obliged to desist from it.

Now therfore conf. her to even dose only employ through day as antisp & tonic Calx of Zinc comb. with Valer.

And am in hopes that from contin of this course may in no long time be in condit to be dismissd.

If not may have recourse to other tonics as Pil Caerul, Peruv. Bark or Cold Bath
