    William McNab

    (1776-1777)

Last case I shall mention is that of Wm McNab.

And this I take notice of merely as one with regard to which had very great diffic.

Must farther add that although had soon fatal termin, am still as much in dark with regard to it as ever.

This patient attended us at one report only.

And must own that to disease as introd into our regist. could give no prop. [name]

In history indeed many sympt indic a hectic affect.

Partic shivering fits, lassit. & [aversn] to motion

But above all freq & prof. sweating.

From these howevr could not pretend to form any decisiv judgemt.

But hoped that future progr. of disease might [through] more light upon it.

And on idea given of [affection] ordered bark to which [preced] use of emetic.

During use of these med some of most [threatning] sympt dimin.

    Partic profuse sweatings.

But shiverings succeeded by fever [withou] remiss.

And when visited him at his fathers house found him affected with fever to very consid deg.

Ordered bark therefore which had taken only to extent of ℥s. every morning to be omitted.

And merly that might see tendency of affection put him of saline julep.

At same time keeping belly open by gentle laxative inject.

Under this treatment fever seemd somewhat to dimin.

And when saw him in evening of Wednesday last thought him in no danger.

On Thursday morning howevr was sudd. seizd with a fit of great sickness.

This was informed was soon followd by vomiting of blood.

And although quantit disch. but very inconsid yet he expired in a few minutes.

As had no opport of examining body after death still as much at loss as before respecting nature of his affection.
