    James Grewer

    (1776-1777)

    James Grewer.

Case of this patient room for very few remarks.

While little ambig respecting the [disea] compl at same time very slight.

No doubt that greater part of his disease a catarrhal affection.

And as when come under our care had cont only for space of forthnight could not prop. be reckond of chron. kind.

    Yet inflammat state evid over.

For now thin mucous disch. had entirely ceased

And was without that pain of breast or throat with which inflam attended.

Disease even seemd to shew some tendency to chronic state.

At least of this indicat, in quantity, viscid & colour of mucus

And still farther evid of tendency from disch taking place prin. after sleeping.

Considered [these] princip part of [affect] as catarrh which if neglected would degen into chronic state.

But besides this, subject also to anoth compl.

Pain vizr at times occurring in his bowels

From transit nature howevr could have no doubt in consid it as of spas. kind.

And in all probab. a dep on wind.

Of which indeed afterwards stronger evid in progress of the disease.

This compl. totally unconnected with catarrhal [affec]

And indeed had been of longr cont

But never to such height as to lead him to apply for aid.

And probab had it not been for catarr affect would not have thought of doing so.

With regard to this compl. then althoug reason to presume that of two would be most obstin yet no reason ground for being alarmd

And was in hopes that every part of case would [soon] have fav termin.

That this has in reality been the case may I think with some degr of confid presume from patients having left us when compl greatly allev.

Practice in this case at first totally directed to catarrhal [affection]

Exhib emetic with view of disch all acumul. mucus from breast.

And at same time of prod determ to surface.

This ordered to be followd by use of a solu of G. Ammon with squils.

From which hoped that by gentle stim to lungs regul. expect promoted & by this means excret. equal to secret.

Thus hoped that both cough would be mitig & future accum prev.

In this hope were not disappointed.

Vomit operated freely, cough became [easier] & during cont of solut of G. Ammon that at last time he visited us only comp from wind in stomach.

In this situat. thought it unnecess to cont solut.

And for wind in stomach gave him [som] of pill Gummosae

Which from assaft. Galban & other [artic] they cont. perhaps to be ranked among best carmin.

What affect of these howevr have not learned.

But as patient has not returned may pres. that if did not remove, at least allev. comp.
