    Susan Thomson

    (1776-1777)

    Susan Thomson.

In this patient have in some meas. seen [successn] of affections.

When first came under care was affectd with a disease very distinct markd.

Had evid swelling & inflammat of fauces & tonsils.

This attended with some degree of diffic both in swallowing & in respirat.

While at same time patient affected with manif. febrile sympt.

No doubt therefore that labourd under inflam. sore throat.

Or to use lang. of Nosol. Cynan. Tonsil.

When came under our care had been but of short durat.

And in usual period had mild & fav. termin

Perhaps in some meas from progr. of disease remed employd

But probab. still more from progr. of disease

Patient however still cont. under our care

And that too not without compl.

While at same time do not entirely seem to be such as might natur have expected

Or at least what parents dreaded.

This patient sever. months ago had been affected with various sympt. from worm

    Partic pain of bowels.

And at that time freed of compl in [conseq] of having voided sever.

Now again became affected in some meas with same sympt as before.

A natural suppos. therefore that might indic same affect.

And well known that those affected with worms often liable to recurr after seemingly compl. cure

Had little hesit in concl. therefore that after sore throat removed cure of sympt from worms would be only obj. of attent.

In this judgem however am now inclind to believe that was too precip.

For pains of belly excepted no other sym of worms have yet appeard.

And patient has not been observd to discharge any.

Inflammat of throat however has been succeeded by a catarrh affect.

And that too of consid obstin.

Besides attended with some other circum serving at least to give alarm.

Had not indeed such quickness of pulse as to give any strong indicat of hectic fever

But observd to have remarkab dispos. to partial sweats.

    Partic on head.

A circum well known to be freq. an attend of Phthis affects.

Yet although may give some alarm without other concurring circum. can by no means be consid as pos or even strong [evid]

Upon whole then consider her as at pres. patient for an affect purely catarrhal

And in this view would hope in no long time for favour. termin.

If however phthisic tend. here greater than at pres. inclind to imag. will soon undeceive us.

At any rate no reason to appreh. immed. danger.

And if phthis, may consid of that kind, which product of catarrh.

Whether therfore adopt one or other supp will very little affect practice at pres period of disease.

For here in both one & other affect must endeav to remove inflam. tenden by antiphlog plan

To mitig freq. of cough by demul.

And to dimin impet. at lungs by deter. to other parts.

On these princip. have had recourse to [practices] already [used]

And With view of determin to other parts have employd blisters, [cathartics] emetics & blister.

As demul. have used oily & mucil mixt

Hitherto howevr have not been attend with desird affect.

From this led to give trial to diff. plan

And on suspicion that both cough & sweating may be effects of pecul. laxity with irritab. [have] ordered trial of Peruv bark.

By effects resulting from it will [natur] be regul. in future managemt.

If allev. cough & sweating will be led to persist.

If has contrary effect will probab. have immed recurr to former plan.

Or to conjunct. of demul. with gentle opiates.

If has no influ whatever on compl. may lead to suspic of affect. being supported by other causes.

And should probab. think of giving trial to some anthelm. med.

For besides prod many very anom symp cough an affect. by no means unfreq. from worms.

Would fain hope however that many trials will not here be necess.

And that compl. may soon be happily terminated.
