George Gibson at 38, frequently passes by the anus, joints of a worm, which appear to be of the Taenia kind, & resemble the seeds of a cucumber. He feels no inconvenience at any time, but during the discharge & he is then sensible of a considerable degree of pain. Pulse regular. Belly rather costive, Appetite much impaired The discharge of these joints has continued for a year & a half during which time few days have elapsed with out some of them coming away. They are never connected with each other, & are sometimes passed involuntarily. He has used no remedies but a few doses of salts from which he has received little benefit Cap. eras mane. Pulv. Jalap comp. ʒ i. nec non sumat. die Lunae, nor [gvo] matutina. Pulv Rad. Filicis maris ʒii & nor 10 [illegible ] Pulv. Jalap. comp. ʒi. 15 The purgative operated well on Sunday morning & he took the Fern powder on Monday, which gave him no uneasiness. But the purgative afterwards operated very briskly. He has discharged no large fragment of the worm, but many single joints came away on Sunday. Few were discharged on Monday. But during the operation of the cathartic, he discharged a considerable quantity of matter resembling grease. Repet. Pulv. Rad Filicis maris & Pulv. Jalap. comp. u. a. mane die Jovis. 19 Took the Fern powder, without any uneasiness on Thursday morning & the purgative afterwards operated very briskly, during the whole course of the day. No more of the greasy matter however was observed to be discharged. He saw only two joints of the worm during the operation of the cathartic & has seen none since Interm. Med. & cap. Pil Stomachic. gr V bis indies. 26 Has had frequent vomiting & [purging] during the course of last week & has at different times discharged, a considerable number of joints of the Taenia. Interm Pil. & Rep. Mist. cum Tinct. Aromat. u. a. January 9th 1790 Has still some degree of looseness, but his appetite is rather mended. He continues to discharge single joints of the Taenia as formerly Interm med. & Cap. om. n. Stanni pulv. ℥ p. ad 4tam vicem nec non Rx tinct. Jalap. ℥ i. Syr. Simp. ℥ iiMcap. ℥ p. mane die Jovis & repet. om hor. donec superv. cathars. 16 Took the Pulveris Stannic as directed. The purgative used afterwards did not operate, & no large fragment of Taenia has been discharged Repet. Pulv. Stanni sed cap. unciam om. n. ad tert. vicem, nec non sumat mane die [Mat] Pulv. Jalap. com. ℥i. 30 Took his medicines as directed, but discharged no worm, & has seen no joints for some weeks past. He at present complains much of pain of his breast. Belly bound. Intem Med & Cap. Pulv. Crem Tart comp. coch [pos] bis indies February 6 Has seen no more of the worm & is at present free from all his symptoms Dismissed.
