    Alexander Napier

    1789

    No14th December 1. 1789.

Alexander Napier at 20, frequently discharges by the anus single joints of a Taenia. They are of different sizes, but most of them about half an inch in length, & two or three tenths of an inch in breadth.

They have considerable resemblance to the seeds of a cucumber. They are most frequently discharged with the faeces when he is at stool, but sometimes come away insensibly. He complains also of [being] frequently affected with pains in his belly, sickness at stomach & vomiting. But he has never observed any joints of the Taenia discharged by vomiting.

Pulse Heat, & Belly natural, appetite in general good, & he sleeps well during the night.

For seven years past he has continued at intervals to discharge these joints. In August last he passed a number of joints connected together measuring about three feet in length, but without a filum. After this the discharge ceased till about a fortnight ago. But since that time he continues to pass single joints as before. He attended at the Dispensary in the summer & ascribes the discharge of the long fragment, to some powder of Tin which he took at that time.

    December. 4th.

Took his medicines as directed without any inconvenience. The Pulvis Gamboge had no obvious operation in the way of catharsis, though all the three doses were taken yesterday, & he then discharged only some joints of the Taenia as usual; but this morning he discharged a ball of it, consisting of a number of joints connected together which when extended will measure about nine or ten feet in length. There is however no appearance of any filum.
