    George Gray

    1789

    No12 November 24th 1789.

George Gray at 48, by trade a mason, is affected with cough & laborious respiration attended with a wheezing noise & a considerable action of the intercostal muscles.

He expectorates very little with the cough, but he feels a sense of tightness & oppression across the thorax; & he complains of pains in his back & limbs. He sometimes also observes slight swelling about the ankles, in the evening bearing the mark of the [finger] upon pressure.

Pulse about 80, full & regular, Tongue clean, appetite much impaired, Thirst moderate Belly regular. Urine scanty

These complaints first began about six weeks ago, & were induced he thinks by exposure to cold. He made use at first of some pectoral medicines, from which he thought he received considerable relief. But since that his complaint is again much aggravated which he ascribes to fresh exposure to cold when at his work.
