    Margaret Martin

    1789

    No7th November 10th 1789

Margaret Martin at 5 is affected with an inflamed swelling on the inside of the left arm. There is another circumscribed tumour, which is still colourless, a little above this on the same arm. She has no sores upon any other parts of her body.

The largest swelling first appeared about the beginning of May last, & was supposed to be the consequence of a hurt which she received on the arm. Neither her parents nor any of her near relations are affected with similar complaints or with scrofula in any form.

She has attended at the dispensary almost ever since the tumour on her arm first began; but it has continued to advance notwithstanding the external application of camphorated oil, the internal use of Cicuta & Peruvian Bark, & the employment of sea bathing for some time during the summer.
