    Jean Holbert

    1789

    No6 November 18th. 1789.

Jean Holbert at 10, is affected with considerable swelling & inflammation of the inguinal glands on both sides, which have very much the appearance of venereal buboes. One of them suppurated & broke about a fortnight ago, & it still continues open discharging a considerable quantity of thin matter. The other, is in an inflamed state & seems to contain matter. There are also several considerable ulcers on the labia pudenda, & she is much pained when she discharges her urine.

Pulse natural, appetite impaired, belly generally costive.

Neither the child herself nor her parents know any cause to which this affection can be attributed. And they are very positive that she has not in any way been exposed to venereal contagion

She had a fever about twelve months ago, & they suspect that the tumours in her groins commenced either during the time of it, or immediately after her recovery.

Neither of her parents have ever been affected with similar symptoms or with obstinate sores on any part of their bodies. But two of their other children have had bad sores. One of them had an ulcer in the hand for many years. The other has a sore in the glands of the neck which has continued open for upwards of a year.

She has used no remedies for this complaint as she concealed it from the knowledge of her parents, who had exhibited to her medicines against worms with which they supposed her to be affected. Since they discovered the swellings they have only applied maturating poultices by which one of the swellings has suppurated & broke.

The pains were somewhat diminished from the application of the poultice to the sores; & the augmented dose of her medicines has not been productive of any uneasiness or other obvious operation. The ulcerations & tumour continue much as before, Cont. Mistura & Ungt Saturn. u. a. Repetantur [etiam] Cataplasmata pro re nata.
