    Mary Wallace

    1788

    No35 February 19th. 1788.

Mary Wallace at 17. is affected with a slight colourless swelling over her thighs & legs, bit it is more particularly observable in the ankle joints. This swelling is, she says, much increased in size towards night & then it leaves deep pits on pressure.

She complains also of pain in her breast, in both sides, & in the lower part of her back, accompanied with cough & dyspnoea. She has likewise headache, vertigo, & distension of her stomach which is much relieved upon the discharge of flatus.

Pulse about 104 & weak. Belly regular. Appetite impaired. Sleeps ill & is affected with great thirst. Her catamenia have never yet appeared.

The swelling of her lower extremities, came on about ten days ago. But the pectoral & dyspeptic symptoms are of about eighteen months standing

She attributes these complaints, to hard labour, & exposure to cold.

She has used a gentle cathartic, without any obvious relief.
