    Binny Craw

    1787

    No12th November 20th. 1787

Binny Craw at 21, seemingly of an healthy appearance, is frequently affected with severe pains in her stomach and bowels, & she is often also affected with severe pain in her forehead attended with a dimness of sight. She discharges at every stool several joints of a worm of the Taenia kind. The joints at present discharged are each about half an inch in length, & about two tenths of an inch in breadth. At present the joints come away single, but she has sometimes discharged a considerable number of them at once united together.

Pulse natural, Belly in general costive, Catamenia regular, [urine] natural, appetite good, but she is often affected with considerable thirst.

Her present complaints began about two years ago, & at that time, she first observed fragments of the worm.

She has taken a variety of remedies without either producing the complete expulsion of the worm or giving much relief of her symptoms.

She knows no cause to which this affection can be attributed.

Took the three doses of the Pulveris Gamboge as directed. The second dose excited some vomiting & after the third she vomited for several hours with great severity.

It had no effect in inducing catharsis & no large fragments of the worm were brought away, single joints continuing to be discharged as formerly.
