Peggy Petrie at 16 of an healthy appearance & stout make, is subjected to a convulsive motion of the muscles of the lower jaw of the right side by which the right angle of the mouth is suddenly drawn downwards & outwards with considerable force. She is at the same time affected with a sense of tightness on the top of her shoulder, as if the skin were drawn upwards. But this is not attended with any pain or change in the position of the parts. This contraction is not continued for any length of time, but returns suddenly at very uncertain intervals. It is worst in cold weather It is then sometimes repeated twice or thrice in a day. But in mild weather it does not trouble her once in eight days. Pulse 70 & of natural strength Appetite good. Belly & menses regular & in every other respect she enjoys perfect health. This complaint first attacked her about ten years ago upon her recovery from a pretty severe fever. It then however took place only to a slight degree & went off in about the space of a month Since that time she has had no return of it, till within these three months. And she ascribes this return to exposure to cold. Rx. Pulv. Valer. Sylv. ℥ p. Cal. Zinici ℈ iMcap coch parv. om. m. & vesp. 20th The powders sat easily on her stomach. But the quantity given her lasted only for five days. During the use of the powder she was never affected with the distortion of her mouth. But since she has not continued them the fits have recurred very frequently The attacks however are now very slight. Cont. Pulv. & hab. dsp. quan January 27. Continued free from her complaint in the first part of the week. But since the commencement of the frost, she has had several returns of the distortion. Cont. Med. u. a. February 3. Has had no return of the distortion of her face Dismissed.
