    Alexander Burn

    1786

    No21 December 22d 1786

Alexander Burn at 60, of a sallow complexion, is much tormented especially after meals, with the sensation of a ball moving up & down his abdomen for some time & then gradually ascending to his stomach. It is there attended by heat & gnawing pain which is soon succeeded by vomiting

The fluid discharged is at first acid then tasteless, & afterwards very bitter & when the straining is violent it has sometimes been tinged with blood. These symptoms are in general preceded by a swelling & tension of his abdomen, but are attended with a sense of constriction. His appetite is much increased immediately after the vomiting & this hunger is soonest allayed by a little warm milk or cold water. And he thinks that flummery & watery fluids agree best with his stomach

His strength is much impaired & he often feels pains in his loins sometimes in his legs & thighs

Pulse about 80 & small. Belly bound & he sleeps ill.

These symptoms have now continued with him for five years at times better & at times worse

But within these twelve months he has been much better, his complaints returning less frequently than formerly though they are still very severe.

Cap. Pil. Stomachic grV ter de die.

    13. The Pills had some effect in moving his belly & since that all his symptoms have been considerably alleviated. Though he is still at times affected with the sense of a ball referred to the region of his stomach, attended with severe pain. Appetite good

But after taking food he is frequently affected with vomiting.
