    Nelly Gordon

    1786

    No18th. December 8th 1786.

Nelly Gordon at 26, with fair hair & of a healthy appearance complains of a sense of pain & fullness at her stomach, with the feeling of a ball forming in her right side, from thence passing over to her left side & then ascending to her stomach, upon which it in general produces a discharge of wind, from which she often feels as if nearly suffocated. She also complains of pain in her back & loins. And her bowels often feel as if full of balls. She is likewise distressed with dyspnoea.

She is frequently subjected to deliquium animi, & at times though seldom she has cold fits succeeded by heat & sweating. All her symptoms are in in general aggravated at night.

Her strength is much impaired, she has an aversion to food, but complains of much thirst. Pulse 98 & very small

Belly & menses regular. Urine in small quantity & of a high colour, the discharge is in general attended with a sense of great heat. She sleeps ill in the night.

The above symptoms commenced about three weeks ago, without any evident cause.

They have been increasing ever since. She has been twice blooded & thinks that the two taken together might be to the extent of twenty four ounces. She has also had a blister applied to the right side, but without relief. She thinks that by these practices her symptoms were rather aggravated.
