No 11th November 24th 1786.
Peggy Hislop at 21 with fair hair & of a delicate appearance complains of cough & dyspnoea with the expectoration of matter in general of a yellow colour, but sometimes of a greenish cast, & sometimes streaked with blood. She is affected also with pain in her left side, with headache & pain of breast when she coughs. She sweats much during the night & complains of great prostration of strength. She is also affected with deafness in one ear, from which there is a discharge of some matter. Pulse 160 & small, Tongue clean. Belly regular. Her menses have been absent for these nine weeks past. Appetite impaired. These complaints first began about nine weeks ago & were ushered in by the sensation of cold. They have been increasing ever since. She knows no cause to which they can be [assigned] but she says that her father died of consumption. Before their commencement she enjoyed good health. Cap. Pulv. G Myrrh comp Jii bis indies. December 2. Did not at first perceive any sensible effect from her powders. But for some days past they have excited sickness at stomach in the morning, & she has had in general two or three loose stools in the day. Cough Dyspnoea & pain of breast much as formerly & she sweats profusely in the mornings. Pulse 146. Tongue clean & moist. But she is affected with much thirst. Cont Pulv G. Myrrh u. a. & Rx. Infus Japon ℥ VI Tinct. Theb. Gr [IX]Mcap ℥p bis indies & repet [aliam] urgente diarrhoea. 9. Has continued the Pulveris Gum Myrrh & Infusion Japonica without any particular uneasiness. But her looseness continues much as before & she is still affected with considerable sweating during the night. Cough & Pain of breast much as before Cont. Med. u. a. 16. Looseness somewhat abated from her mixture. But the cough & sweating continue much as before. Cont. Med. u. a. 23. Thinks her cough & pains better. But her sweatings still continue. Other symptoms as before Cont. Med December 30 Cough & pains easier, but she still sweats much. Looseness gone. Pulse 100. Tongue clean Interm Mist ex Infus Japon. sed Cont. Pulv. G. Myrrh. u. a. January 6th Has had some sickness from the powders, but no vomiting. She continues free from any return of the looseness & her cough is rather more moderate. But the sweatings still continue. Pulse 130. Tongue very clean. Cont. Pulv. G. Myrrh. u. a.
