    Tibby Deacon

    1786

    No8th November 10th 1786.

Tibby Deacon at 28 of a middle stature, with dark hair & healthy appearance is attacked commonly once sometimes twice in the space of a fortnight, with a sense of fullness & weight in the lower belly attended with borborygmi. This is soon followed by a pain rising from thence upwards to the stomach. And as soon as it has reached the stomach, there follows sickness & vomiting commonly of a bilious matter, attended with pain in her back, loins, & head. Her mouth & throat are then parched she is affected with excessive thirst, & has especially a strong inclination for cold water. This attack always lasts twenty four hours, & then goes off leaving her much weakened. She says she is always sensible of its approach, by that swelling & [tension] of her belly.

Pulse 92 & full. Skin hot, Tongue clean. Appetite tolerable. Belly regular. Her menses have been absent for nine months past. Her urine feels uncommonly warm when she passes it, is high coloured & upon standing deposits a sediment.

Upon her menstrual discharge not appearing at the usual period she first began to feel a fullness in her belly, with borborygmi but she did not complain of the pain other symptoms till six months ago. She ascribes all her complaints to the interruption of her menstrual discharge. She always enjoyed good health before that time & at present in the intervals between her fits, she complains of nothing but a fullness in her belly. She has used only some simple medicines & these have been without effect.
