    Ann Hay

    No30 January 21st. 1786

    Ann Hay at 47. a married woman complains of pains in the small of her back & sides great uneasiness with a sense of weakness & emptiness in the breast. She is subject to frequent attacks of complete syncope preceded by headache & vertigo & followed as she says by globus hystericus. Frequently on becoming warm in bed or when sitting by the fire, she is affected with a very copious reddish eruption over her whole body which on the least exposure to cold suddenly disappears & she is then much distressed with sickness & anxiety. Pulse about 70 & of good strength. Tongue clean, appetite gone, Thirst great belly very costive Catamenia absent for 7 years.

    These complaints commenced about five years ago & were ushered in by a regular febrile paroxysm.

    But they were much aggravated by a fall which she received on her back about a fortnight ago since which she has considerable difficulty & pain in voiding her urine. She imputes her complaints to cold. She was formerly healthy. Was blooded without relief but derived some benefit from a medicine which she took on the approach of her fits.

    28. Has taken the powder as directed which has had the affect of opening her belly, & her sickness at stomach is much relieved. She has been affected with none of the fainting fits for this week past but she complains of considerable vertigo & her urine is still scanty & high coloured.

    February 4th. When she began the use of the pills she was affected with severe vomiting, but since that, they have never occasioned even sickness at stomach & her complaints have been considerably easier. She complains however to day of some sickness & her belly is very bound.

    February 11 The Pill Foetid have purged her a little & she is now free from all her symptoms
