    William Oswald

    1785

    No19 December 2d 1785

William Oswald at 18 a lace worker is distressed with a dull heavy obtuse pain, over the whole head, but particularly in the forehead. This is attended with great languor & drowsiness, it is generally easier in the night, & he sleep tolerably well. His eyes appear heavy & he says they are very weak especially at night. Pulse about 65 & pretty strong. Tongue appetite, thirst & belly natural.

These complaints commenced about a year & a half ago. He knows no cause for them. He has been subject from his infancy to frequent attacks of Tinea Capitis which was always repelled by the application of soap & water. But has had frequent returns. It appeared about twelve months ago, on the back of his neck, & lower part of the occiput, & while this discharge continued, his headache was considerably relieved. He has also, since he was very young, had at different times, several swellings under the ears, & in the forepart of the neck some of which suppurated about three months ago, but healed up kindly, & in a short time. During this discharge too his headache was much easier. None of these swellings are to be perceived at present. None of his relations are subject to headache. He has taken doses of Glauber salts at different times, & has had his head shaved, but without any benefit.

Cap. Pulv. Valer. Sylv. ℥ i. ter de die.

10 Has taken the Valerian regularly, without any inconvenience, but his headache has been rather more severe than formerly.

Interm. Pulv. Valer. Sylv. Applic vesic muchae & postea f. fontic ope Ungt. Epispast.

    17. There has been a very free discharge from the blister & issue since which the affection of his eyes is much alleviated, though he still complains somewhat of headache
