    Barbara Orrock

    1785

    No7th November 13th. 1785.

Barbara Orrock at 33, a married woman of an unhealthy appearance & much emaciated. at present complains of pain in the stomach & bowels, with frequent eructations & flatus, bad taste in the mouth but no acidity. The pain remits at times & she is subject to fits of sickness & faintness very frequently

She is also affected with headache cough, pain of breast & dyspnoea.

The cough produces retching & sometimes vomiting. She has likewise frequent stitches in either side which sometimes continue for days together. Appetite very bad. Belly loose. No thirst, Urine natural. menses regular skin cool. Pulse very feeble & slow.

These complaints began about nine months ago when she was nursing. She was then attacked with cough & violent Haemoptysis for three days. She coughed up a great quantity of pure blood & some mixed with saliva. The Haemoptysis left her about a fortnight after the first attack. The complaints of the alimentary canal occurred about five months ago, immediately after weaning a child & she can think of no cause for them. She imputes the pectoral complaints to over-exertion in carrying about the child she was nursing. On the 11th she had some Peruvian Bark & Valerian which were taken regularly, but always produced sickness & sometimes vomiting.
