    Alexander Robertson

    (1785-1786)

12 In Alexander Robertson though very young boy have an instance of obstinate Ophthalmia.

Of that kind which nosologists2 & practical writers have termed Ophthalmia Palpebrarum Ophthalmia Tarsi etc.

And many of them perhaps with no less propriety Ophthalmia Scrofula.

For very generally at least depends on a Scrofula affection.

And this I own though neither hereditary taint nor other marks of disease suspected to be case in present instance.

Accordingly am attempting to combat it by external application of Aerugine [&] [interval] use of Cicuta.

    Explanatory notes:

    1) References are made throughout the case notes to a dispensary patient register. However, no evidence has been found that this register survives.

    2) Nosology is the branch of medical science dealing with the classification of diseases. Individuals referred to in the case notes as nosologists were commonly those who had published nosological, or classificatory, medical texts.
