    Molly Newal

    1785

    No42 February 25. 1785.

Molly Newal at 7. Is affected with swelling of her throat both externally & internally.

Both the tonsils are enlarged to a great degree & are of a redder colour than natural but without much pain. The external tumour is situated principally on the left side directly under the Ear. She complains also of great pain in the fore part of her head. This affection occasions great difficulty of breathing, which is generally much aggravated during the night, so as to deprive her of rest. She is troubled also with a pain in the left side of her chest.

Her upper extremities are at times seized with violent cramps. But they seldom remain for any length of time. Appetite good. But from the tumour in the throat she cannot swallow without great difficulty. Belly bound. And at times she has discharged worms. Pulse about 50.

The swelling of her throat appeared on the outside about [twenty] weeks ago. The internal affection was first observed about six weeks ago, since which it has been gradually increasing in size. With the complaint of her chest, she has been affected for some years but the cramps only began this winter. It is two or three years since she has been troubled with worms.

Before the affection of her fauces appeared she was attacked with a fever, which was attended with an eruption, resembling much as her mother imagines the measles. The eruption entirely disappeared in three days when the swelling of her neck began. This complaint she attributes to cold. She has used some Rhubarb & she has applied a blister between the shoulders since which she thinks that her breathing has been a little relieved.

March 5th The powder has had some effect in moving her belly.

She has used the gargarism as directed.

The swelling is considerably diminished & at present she breathes without any difficulty. But she is still a little affected with difficult deglutition.
