    No38. February 12th 1785.

    Betty Willis at 29 complains of excessive pain about the region of her stomach. At times the stomach swells to a great degree

    This particularly takes place in the afternoon after taking food.

    She is troubled also at times with vertigo nausea & inclination to vomit, which are accompanied with headache, borborygmi & frequent eructations. In a short time the above symptoms gradually disappear, she then begins to feel a depression of spirits & a sense of weight about the praecordia, which are soon succeeded by syncope.

    Appetite bad & whatever she takes in a short time turns sour & she complains of nausea & inclination to vomit which symptoms are very much relieved by a free discharge of the contents of the stomach. Belly pretty regular. Catamenia at present regular.

    She has had these symptoms for upwards of six years. She was first seized with a pain in her left side, which has continued ever since. She attributes this affection to cold.

    She has used no medicines

    26. The pain of stomach continues much as before & she is at present distressed with frequent cough.

    Cont. Mist cum Tinct. Absinthe & cap. om. m. h. som. Pil. Theb. gr X.

    March 5 Has in general vomited after every dose of the Tincture Absinthe.

    But her stomach complaints are easier. She is however much distressed with the cough which is particularly uneasy during the night notwithstanding the use of the Pill Thebaic. And at present she complains much of pain of her side.
