No14 November 28th 1784
William Smith at 25 a hair dresser complains of severe cough & dyspnoea which are at times attended with pain in his side situated under the false ribs. He is troubled also with spitting of blood which is sometimes cast up of a blueish colour & at other times comes up mixed with mucus & is of a blackish appearance. Pulse 120 Belly natural appetite good. The cough has continued with him three years & has always been much aggravated during the winter. The difficulty of breathing first attacked him about a month ago. The spitting of blood made its appearance three months since, & continued for eight days But after this it left him & never was perceived till within these eight days past. He cannot with any certainty assign the cause, but is inclined to think that it is owing to sudden & frequent change of temperature, as his business unavoidably exposes him to pass from warm rooms into the open air. He has used venesection & has been in the country but with little benefit. App. vesic p. d. lat. & f. font. ope Ungt. Epispast. m. m. Rx. Pulv. G. Arab. ℥ i Sal.
