N^o8. November 12^th 1784

William Brown at 59 complains of great pain in his right arm which begins about the head of the Os humeri & extends down to the tip of the fingers. This affection appears to take its origin from the insertion of the deltoid muscle & from thence it goes along the inside of the arm upon the biceps & passes to the other muscles till it arrives at the tip of the fingers. Appetite good. Belly rather costive. The pulse appears to be stronger in the affected arm than in the other.

This affection first attacked him about eight days ago, at which time the pain commenced in the shoulder & continued fixed in that situation for two or three days, without affecting any other part. But soon after it gradually descended to the biceps & exhibited here the same phaenomena as at first. In a short time it was removed in the shoulder & from thence was soon communicated to the other parts of the arm with redoubled violence. And in this situation it has remained ever since.

He attributes the origin of this affection to exposure to cold. He has used no medicines.

November 20^th Has used his medicines as directed & his pain is considerably relieved but his belly is very bound.

27. Belly regular since the use of the Aloetic pills & his pain continues much easier.
