    Cath Muir

    1784

    No16th June 11th 1784

Cath. Muir at 55 is troubled at times, with disagreeable eructations, flatus & pain of breast. This complaint has been attended with great loss of strength & of flesh. She says she finds herself generally worse either upon laying in a horizontal posture or when she is in bed. But the tendency to suffocation, with which she is then affected, almost totally disappears when she is erect.

The most severe of her symptoms are frequent eructations & flatus. She says she first feels a sensation at the pit of her stomach resembling the points of many lancets which seem to be piercing into her vitals. This pain ascends gradually to her throat & is there relieved by a discharge in the manner above related. The wind sometimes when ascending appears to her to be obstructed in the passage from the stomach upwards, & it is generally at this particular time that she feels the most excruciating pain & soon after the flatus has made its escape, she is generally troubled with a spontaneous discharge of water from the stomach.

She was first seized with the above complaints in the month of July last. No cause is assigned for them.

She has taken one vomit & has been in the practice of drinking Peppermint water, but this was done of her own accord & without any benefit.
